Textce is free software and it is built to need as little of your information as possible. This is what matters most, in plain words.
This Privacy Policy explains how Textce ("Textce", "we", "us" or "our") handles information when you visit the Textce website at textce.com (the "Website") or use the Textce apps and software (the "App"). It should be read together with our Terms of Use.
Textce has no accounts, so there is no profile, no sign-in and no customer record about you. The sections below describe the few places where information could be involved anyway.
We do not ask your age and we do not collect personal information, so we cannot check it. See Children and the Terms of Use for more.
That matters for privacy. The networks you connect to, and the people in the rooms you join, have their own privacy practices. Textce does not control them, and this policy does not cover them.
When you use Textce to chat, your messages, nickname and any other details you enter are sent straight from your device to the network you choose. They do not pass through Textce servers, because Textce does not run any for chat.
We therefore do not read, copy, log, store, analyze, moderate or delete your chat messages, and we cannot get them back for you or remove them for anyone else.
The honest answer is very little.
Like almost every website, the server that delivers textce.com may keep standard technical logs when you visit. These can include your IP address, the date and time, the page or file requested, the browser and device type, and the page that referred you.
These logs exist to keep the Website running and secure, for example to fix errors and spot abuse. We do not use them to identify you, to build a profile of you or to track you from site to site, and we do not sell them. They stay with our web host and are only seen by the people who run the server.
The Website is delivered over an encrypted HTTPS connection, so what you read and download cannot be easily watched by others on your network.
Settings, saved networks, nicknames, themes and similar preferences are stored on your own device. Textce does not send them to us. If you delete the App or its data, they are gone, and we have no copy to restore.
When you connect to an IRC network, the App sends the nickname, username, real-name field and any password or other details you choose to enter directly to that network, and your messages go to the people in the rooms you join. See the privacy policy of each network for how it handles that information.
To show which networks and rooms are active, Textce publishes public statistics about IRC networks on its Website, such as how many users and rooms a network has and the names and sizes of popular public channels.
These statistics are gathered from the networks' own public information, using a connection that is not linked to any Textce user. They do not come from your use of Textce, and they do not contain personal information about the people on those networks, such as their nicknames, hostnames or messages. Some channel names are hidden when they appear to be unsuitable.
IRC was designed as an open, public chat system. Please keep in mind that:
Textce does not sell or rent information to anyone. A few outside services do touch the Website or the App, and they have their own policies:
The Textce Website does not use advertising or analytics cookies and does not track you across other sites. If a small amount of data is kept in your browser, it is only to make the page work, for example to remember a display choice, and it stays on your device.
The App keeps its settings in local storage on your device so that it remembers how you set it up. You can clear this at any time by removing the App's data.
Because we collect so little, there is little to use it for. Information is used only to:
We do not use information to send marketing, make automated decisions about you or profile you.
We do not sell your information and we do not share it for advertising. We could only ever have the website server logs described in this policy, and we will not reveal even those to anyone unless:
If a legal request seems too broad, we will try to narrow it. We do not hold your chat messages, so we cannot hand them over. Requests about chat content belong with the network that carried it.
Textce does not keep any account or personal data about you, so there is nothing of that kind to expire. Web server logs are kept by our web host for only as long as it takes to operate and secure the Website, under the host's own settings. Settings in the App stay on your device until you remove them.
We take reasonable steps to keep the Website safe. The best protection, though, is holding as little data as possible: we cannot lose or leak what we never had.
No online system is perfectly secure, and Textce cannot guarantee security. See the next section for how to protect yourself.
How safe your connection is also depends on the network and on you.
/oper or NickServ commands, or other secrets in a chat window. Anything that shows up on screen may be logged by someone.See the IRC guide on staying safe for more.
Textce is for adults only. You must be at least 18, or the age of legal adulthood in the country whose laws govern you, whichever is higher (see the Terms of Use). We do not ask your age or collect personal information, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under that age. IRC networks may contain content that is not suitable for young people.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe a minor is using Textce, please have them stop and uninstall the App.
Depending on where you live, laws such as the GDPR, the UK GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act may give you rights over personal information, such as to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to its use, to receive a copy of it, or to complain to a data protection authority.
Because Textce has no accounts and does not collect personal information beyond ordinary web server logs, there is usually nothing for us to give you, change or delete. If you think we hold something about you, please ask through the contact details and we will do what the law requires. You can always:
We do not sell personal information and do not carry out the kind of sharing that the California law calls "sale" or "sharing".
Textce is available worldwide. The Website's hosting, and the networks you connect to, may be in other countries from yours, and information such as server logs may be handled there. By using the Website you understand that your connection may cross borders.
We may update this policy from time to time, for example when the law changes or when Textce does. Because we have no accounts and hold no contact details, we cannot message you directly. We post the new version on this page and change the "Last updated" date at the top, so please check back now and then. Using Textce after a change means you accept it.
For questions about this policy, start with the Help Center. To reach us, see Bug reports & contact.
Textce is only an IRC client. We do not run any IRC networks and we do not endorse any IRC channel. For a problem with a network or a channel, contact that network's staff.
